What Is a Nicotine Pouch? A Plain-English Definition

A nicotine pouch is a small, soft, tobacco-free pouch that you place between your upper lip and gum. It contains nicotine, plant fibre, flavouring and sweetener. There is no smoke, no vapour, no combustion and no tobacco leaf. You leave it in for twenty to forty minutes, then throw it away.

That is the whole definition. Everything below is detail.

For adults 18 and over.

What is actually inside a nicotine pouch?

Four things, in a sealed fleece pouch roughly the size of a stick of chewing gum folded in half:

Component What it does
Non-woven fleece The pouch wall. Food-contact grade, heat-sealed on all four sides so nothing loose escapes.
Plant fibre and cellulose The filler. Gives the pouch body and carries everything else. This replaces tobacco leaf.
Nicotine The active ingredient. In quality products this is pharmaceutical-grade, to USP/EP specification.
Flavour system Food-grade flavourings, sweeteners and cooling agents. This is what you actually taste.

That is it. No tar, no ash, no combustion, no aerosol, no battery, no device.

How do you use one?

  1. Take one pouch from the can.
  2. Place it between your upper lip and gum, off to one side.
  3. Leave it there. Do not chew it, do not move it around.
  4. Expect a tingle for the first few minutes. That is the cooling agent, not the nicotine.
  5. Remove after twenty to forty minutes and dispose of it in the lid compartment most cans provide.

It is genuinely that simple, which is most of the appeal. There is nothing to charge, refill, clean or replace.

How is a nicotine pouch different from everything else?

Product Tobacco? Smoke or vapour? How it is used
Nicotine pouch No Neither Held between lip and gum
Snus Yes — moist tobacco Neither Held between lip and gum
Cigarette Yes Smoke Inhaled, burned
Vape No leaf, liquid nicotine Vapour Inhaled from a device
Nicotine gum No Neither Chewed, licensed as a medicine
Chewing tobacco Yes Neither Chewed, requires spitting

The single most common confusion is pouch versus snus. They look nearly identical and are used identically. The difference is the filler: snus contains moist ground tobacco, a nicotine pouch contains plant fibre. That is the whole distinction, and it is the reason pouches are often called "tobacco-free snus" or "white snus" even though neither name is quite right.

What do the strength numbers mean?

Most cans state nicotine in milligrams per pouch. A 6mg pouch contains six milligrams of nicotine. Some brands instead print mg/g, which is milligrams per gram of pouch material and is not the same figure — a point worth knowing before you compare two cans on a shelf.

Typical ranges:

  • Low: 3–5mg. Where beginners should start. NOMA's low strength range sits here.
  • Medium: 6–10mg. Where most regular adult users settle. See the 6–10mg range.
  • High: 11mg and up. For established tolerance only. NOMA's high strength range runs to 30mg.

One caution that trips almost everyone up: perceived strength is mostly cooling agent, not nicotine. A heavily mentholated 6mg can feel fiercer than a mild 12mg. We explain why in our guide to the numbers on the can.

Moist or dry?

Pouches come conditioned either dry or moist. A dry pouch waits for your saliva before it starts releasing, so it begins slowly and can go papery. A moist pouch is pre-conditioned and starts immediately.

In Northern Europe this is a preference. In Southeast Asia it matters more, because heat and humidity are unkind to a dry format. Every NOMA pouch is moist, regular slim and ultra-soft, formulated for this climate rather than shipped here from one that has never had to think about it.

Who is NOMA?

NOMA is a Malaysian nicotine pouch brand, manufactured in Estonia to EU standards, built for Asian palates and Asian weather. The range runs from 4mg to 30mg across mint, fruit and dessert flavours, twenty pouches to a can. You can see the whole thing in the Signature Collection.

Quick answers

Do nicotine pouches contain tobacco?

No. The filler is plant fibre and cellulose. No tobacco leaf is used.

Do you spit with a nicotine pouch?

No. Unlike chewing tobacco, there is nothing to spit. Swallow normally; just do not deliberately swallow the extra saliva a fresh pouch produces, which is what causes hiccups.

Do you swallow the pouch?

No. Remove it after twenty to forty minutes and throw it away.

Can you feel a pouch in your mouth?

For the first few minutes, yes. Most people stop noticing it after that, which is why the fleece quality matters so much.

How many pouches are in a can?

Twenty in a NOMA can. The category standard is fifteen to twenty, so it is worth checking before comparing prices.

For adults 18+. Nicotine is an addictive substance. Not for non-nicotine users, under-18s, or people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. NOMA is not a smoking cessation product.
