The Nicotine Pouch Glossary: 42 Terms, Defined Without the Marketing

Every category invents its own vocabulary, and this one has more than most. Some of it is genuinely useful engineering language. Some of it is marketing pretending to be engineering. Here is the lot, alphabetically, defined the way we would explain it to a friend.

For adults 18 and over.

A – C

All-white. A pouch where both the fleece and the filler are white, with no tobacco-derived colouring. Means the pouch will not stain like traditional brown snus. Every NOMA pouch is all-white.

Batch code. The printed code on the base of a can tying it to a specific production run and its certificate of analysis. No batch code, no traceability. It is the first thing to check on an unfamiliar can.

Buzz. Informal term for the head-rush some users feel from a pouch above their tolerance. Not a goal. Usually a sign the strength is wrong.

Can. The container. Typically holds 15–20 pouches, with a lid compartment for used ones. NOMA cans hold 20.

Cellulose. Plant-derived filler material that replaces tobacco in a tobacco-free pouch.

Child-resistant closure. A lid engineered to defeat a small child, tested to ISO 8317. Mandatory on EU-produced product.

CLP. The EU's Classification, Labelling and Packaging regulation. Determines what warnings and content information must appear on a can.

COA. Certificate of Analysis. The lab document for a production batch confirming nicotine content and composition.

Cooling agent. The compound producing the cold sensation — menthol or a synthetic cooler. Does the majority of the work in how "strong" a pouch feels, which has nothing to do with nicotine content.

D – H

Drip. The saliva a pouch produces. Heavier in moist formats, especially in the first minutes. Swallow normally; do not chase it.

Dry pouch. A pouch with low moisture content that waits for saliva before releasing. Slower start, longer shelf stability, more prone to feeling papery.

ENPA. The European Nicotine Pouch Association. Publishes a voluntary industry standard covering composition limits and marketing conduct.

Fleece. The non-woven material forming the pouch wall. Quality here determines whether you notice the thing in your mouth after ten minutes.

Freebase nicotine. Nicotine in its unprotonated form. Absorbs readily at higher pH but is harsher. Contrast with nicotine salt.

Gum line. Where the pouch sits. Rotating between positions rather than always using the same spot is standard advice.

I – N

ISO 8317. The international test standard for child-resistant packaging. A specific, measurable requirement, not a marketing phrase.

Large / Original format. The biggest common pouch size. More material, more presence, less discretion.

Mini. The smallest format. Very discreet, shorter release, lower total load.

mg per pouch. Nicotine content stated per individual pouch. The figure that actually tells you what you are taking.

mg/g. Nicotine per gram of pouch material. A different number from mg per pouch, and not directly comparable. Brands sometimes print the one that flatters them.

Moist pouch. A pouch pre-conditioned with moisture so release begins immediately. Faster onset, better suited to hot climates. NOMA's entire range is moist.

Nicotine salt. Nicotine bound with an acid, smoother at equivalent strength than freebase.

Nicotine pouch. A tobacco-free pouch containing nicotine, plant fibre and flavouring, held between lip and gum. Defined fully in our definition guide.

P – R

pH. Acidity or alkalinity of the pouch. Higher pH shifts nicotine toward its freebase form, speeding absorption but increasing harshness. The main lever behind "this one hits faster".

Plateau. The long, level middle phase of a pouch's release, after the initial peak. Where a well-built pouch spends most of its life.

Portion. Scandinavian term for a single pouch. You will see it on European packaging.

Pouch count. How many are in the can. Fifteen versus twenty is a 33% difference in value that identical-looking cans routinely hide.

Regular slim. The mainstream format: narrower than Original, longer than Mini. Comfortable under the lip, discreet, enough material for a proper release curve. NOMA's chosen format.

Release curve. How a pouch delivers flavour and nicotine over time. The real measure of formulation quality.

S – Z

Slim. A narrow format. Often used loosely and interchangeably with regular slim.

Snus. The Swedish original: moist ground tobacco in a pouch. Contains tobacco. Not the same product as a nicotine pouch, despite identical use.

Sting. The sharp initial sensation on placement. Fades within days as your gum acclimatises. Mostly cooling agent and pH, not nicotine.

Strength. Officially, nicotine content. Experientially, a blend of nicotine, pH and cooling agent — which is why the number on the can and the feeling in your mouth often disagree.

Tobacco-free. Contains no tobacco leaf or tobacco-derived filler. Does not mean nicotine-free.

Tolerance. Your established comfort level. Rises with regular use. The reason a strength that floored you in week one feels unremarkable in month three.

Ultra soft. A finer, more pliable fleece that sits flatter against the gum. The difference between forgetting a pouch is there and counting the minutes.

USP/EP. United States Pharmacopeia / European Pharmacopoeia. The specification standards for pharmaceutical-grade nicotine. A real quality marker, and an expensive one.

Variety pack. A mixed selection across flavours or strengths. The sensible way to find your preference before committing to a case. Ours are here.

White snus. Common informal name for a nicotine pouch. Inaccurate — there is no snus in it — but widely used and worth recognising.

Where to go next

If the vocabulary is new, start with what a nicotine pouch actually is, then the first 30 days. If you already know all this and just want the product, the Signature Collection is the whole range.

For adults 18+. Nicotine is an addictive substance. Not for non-nicotine users, under-18s, or people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. NOMA is not a smoking cessation product.
