Mini, Slim, Regular, Large: Nicotine Pouch Formats Explained

Strength gets all the attention. Format decides whether you actually enjoy the thing.

Two pouches at identical nicotine strength, in different formats, are genuinely different products — different comfort, different release behaviour, different levels of visibility under your lip. Almost nobody explains this, so here it is.

For adults 18 and over.

The four formats

Format Rough size Under the lip Release Best for
Mini ~30 × 10mm Barely detectable Short, lighter total load Maximum discretion, first-timers
Slim ~34 × 11mm Low profile Moderate Discretion with a bit more behind it
Regular slim ~34 × 13mm Comfortable, low profile Full curve, long plateau Everyday use. The mainstream choice
Large / Original ~36 × 16mm Noticeable Longest, most material Traditional snus users, long sessions

Measurements vary a little between manufacturers — there is no governing standard — so treat these as the category's working conventions rather than fixed specifications.

What each format is actually like

Mini

Genuinely invisible. You can hold a conversation, take a meeting, sit through dinner, and nobody knows. The trade-off is material: less filler means a shorter, lighter release. Minis tend to feel like they finish early, because they do.

Good for: anyone who values being discreet above everything else.

Slim

The compromise format. Narrower than regular, still enough material for a proper curve. In practice many brands use "slim" and "regular slim" interchangeably, which makes shelf comparison harder than it should be.

Regular slim

Where the category has settled, and for good reason. Long and narrow, so it distributes along the gum line rather than bunching. Enough filler for a full peak-plateau-spent curve. Low profile enough that after the first few minutes most people stop noticing it.

This is the format NOMA builds, in every flavour and every strength from 4mg to 30mg.

Large / Original

The traditional snus dimension, carried over into tobacco-free products. More material, longer duration, and a real presence under the lip. Loved by long-term snus users and often disliked by everyone else, because it is visible and it is a lot of pouch.

The two things that matter more than size

Fleece quality

A small pouch in coarse fleece is more uncomfortable than a large pouch in fine fleece. The material rubbing against your gum is what you feel at minute fifteen, not the dimensions. Ultra-soft fleece — finer, more pliable, flatter against the gum — is the single biggest comfort variable in the category and it never appears in the size comparison.

Moisture

A dry pouch of any format waits for your saliva before it does anything. A moist pouch starts on contact. Format governs how much and how long; moisture governs how soon.

Both are covered properly in the anatomy of a NOMA pouch.

Why we build one format and not four

A fair question, since plenty of brands offer the full spread.

Our answer is that regular slim, ultra-soft and moist is the best combination for this climate and this market, and that offering four formats mostly gives people a way to buy the wrong one. A mini in Malaysian heat has less material to hold its conditioning and fades faster. A large is uncomfortable in a country where you are wearing it through a 33°C afternoon.

So we build the one that works here, and put the variety into flavour and strength instead — nine profiles across the Signature Collection, from mellow fruit to arctic mint.

Which format should you choose?

  • Discretion is everything — mini, or a regular slim from a brand with good fleece. Format matters less than people assume once the fleece is right.
  • You want one everyday pouch — regular slim.
  • You are coming from traditional snus — large will feel familiar, but try regular slim before assuming you need it.
  • You are brand new — regular slim at a low strength. Island Pineapple 4mg is where we start people.

Quick answers

What is the difference between slim and regular slim?

A couple of millimetres in width, and in practice the terms are used loosely. Regular slim carries slightly more material and a fuller release curve.

Which nicotine pouch format is most discreet?

Mini, followed by slim and regular slim. Large is visible under the lip on most people.

Does format affect strength?

Not directly — strength is stated per pouch regardless of size. But a larger pouch holds more material, so the same stated strength can deliver differently.

What format does NOMA use?

Regular slim, ultra soft, moist, across the entire range. Twenty pouches to a can.
